Hello

Today we are going to Muse about language.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Colored text is a link.  Clicking on the text will provide additional information about the subject.

CELLOPHANE TAPE

The other day I was sitting in a lobby when I overheard a man talking to the receptionist. In a distinct British accent he asked if she had any cellophane tape he could use.

“Eh? Cellophane tape? How quaint, how very British!“, I thought to myself. He was of course asking for Scotch tape I thought to myself.

But the issue is not so simple. “Scotch Tape” is a brand name that has become a generic term for the tape. It is similar to the word “Kleenex” being used instead of facial tissue.

Or is it?

I looked it up and found that in some countries ‘cellophane tape ” is a generic term, but in others it is a trademark. So, this particular bit of language is not so simple.

We have many terms we use in a generic sense that are actual specific to products. “I need to Xerox this.” “Put the milk in the icebox”. Sometimes we drive on the “freeway” even when there are tolls. And so on.

Ever-changing language

I find language fun but ever changing. “Take a listen” is commonly used today, but the first time I heard someone use the expression I thought, “How ignorant!

I guess I lost that one.

A friend lived many years abroad. When she returned to the”states”, she found that language changed in many ways. This is part of what she wrote:

I’ve been thinking about the evolution of the English language.  When I returned to the U.S. in 2002 after 12 years in Germany, I discovered a sometimes pretentious and gratuitous vocabulary that had not been in usage in 1990.

Examples are “rescue,” as in our dog is a rescue.  You used to adopt a dog from a shelter, but I guess the word rescue has a more urgent, altruistic connotation.

When did the word “playdate”  come into usage?  Whatever happened to kids getting together to play spontaneously?.  When did mothers have to coordinate their calendars to agree on a mutually convenient time?  Playdate – the word sounds pretentious and downright silly.

I soon learned that you didn’t contact or get in touch with someone. You “reached out” to them.  Our niece once told me after I had inquired about something that she would reach out to someone and circle back to me with the information.

You guys” is now a staple of our vocabulary.  Why, it is so common, I find myself using it all the time!

Oh, I discovered that people no longer had problems; they had “issues.”  Much more benign sounding.  A euphemism if ever there was one.

The word “problem” is now only used – for example – by a server in a restaurant. When asked to bring something to the table.  The response is often, “No problem.”

Why should it be?

Patricia M

So, hang in there. Change is with us now and always has been. It is kind of fun.

On the subject of Dogs

On the subject of Dogs

Don’t know why, but today my thoughts have gone to the dogs. I’m a dog person. I grew up with dogs. I’ve always liked them.

As I think back on the dogs that been part of my lifeI have a warm feeling, but one that often ends in sadness.

The first dog I remember was named Sport. It was a mixed breed, what we would call today a street-dog. I was about 6 years old. We lived in Kingman, Arizona which was small town America for sure. One day Sport came running home, foaming at the mouth in distress. He had eaten poison someone had put out, probably for coyotes. He ran off and died in a wash about a half mile from our house. Dad found him. Sad.

After Sport died, my older brother used some money he earned on his paper routes and bought a female Collie we called Lady. I loved Lady. She and I were constant companions. She became my dog. She would follow me wherever I went. She especially liked to follow me when I “rode” my brother’s bike.

I was too small to reach the pedals or to get on the bike without an aid. Fortunately we lived on a small hill. I would take the bike and a bucket up the street. The bucket became my step which allowed me to climb onto the bike and coast down the hill. I could make it about six blocks before I came to a stop. Lady would run along side the whole way and then walk with me as I brought back the bike.

My folks were concerned Lady would go into heat and we would be dealing with randy dogs and then puppies. They decided to have Lady spayed. In those days there was no veterinarian in town so they talked with our family doctor who agreed to perform the procedure. He came over and Dad cleared off a work table in the garage to be used for the operation. Mom, Dad and I were present watching.

The doctor misjudged the amount of ether a small animal would need and Lady died on the table. I was devastated, sobbing uncontrollably. Also sad.

After that we went a while without a dog.

We moved to California and eventually I wore my parents down and they agreed to let me have a dog. We went through several. Tippy was from the pound and a nice little dog but a runner. After being retrieved a number of times from the pound, Dad just let hime go.

Next was a German Shepard. I have forgotten its name. It was fiercely protective of the family to the point that we could not have friends over without locking up the dog. It bit the milk man and threatened anyone who came to our yard. We eventually gave it to a rancher who lived in a rural area and I heard the dog was quite happy protecting the livestock.

Since then I have had many dogs, if I count correctly, 10. They all lived a full life and when their time was up I was saddened to lose them.

So, to those who do not know him, let me introduce TEDDY

Teddy

Today we have a charmer.

He is watchful.

He is inquisitive.

Checking the I-Phone

And, he likes television.

He likes TV

He also has a job.

Teddy has decided he is the morning greeter. Just before 7am everyday he hops onto the bed and he comes over to where I am sleeping. He sits like a vulture over me, watching for any sign of awakening. If I move or blink my eyes he is on me in a flash, licking my face, my ears, my neck. ITS TIME TO GET UP!

That’s Teddy.

As to fatherly advice

Recently a friend and I were talking about parents, children and relationships. It brought to mind my Dad, who led by example but seldom offered “words of wisdom”.

When I was about to leave home for college Dad sat down with me for a fatherly chat, to offer advice as I prepared to leave the fold. It has stuck in my mind because it was so unusual. Up to this point our relationship had definitely been parent-child.

Among other things, he said, “If you make a promise, keep it. And, if you borrow money, be sure to pay it back.”

He went on to relate his experience. He had been an officer in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II.

At the conclusion of Officers Candidate School (OCS), the men were preparing to ship out to their respective assignments. They were to leave the following morning. One Marine Dad knew wanted to go to the local dance but he had no money. He asked Dad to lend him 50 cents, promising him he would pay it back the following morning. Morning came and the Marine was gone and there was no pay back.

Dad said, “I met him again thirty years later at a business meeting. All I could think was The SOB owes me 50 cents!

It Ain’t Necessarily So . . .

It Ain’t Necessarily So

We hear and read all sorts of things these days. Some are fascinating. I came across this the other day:

This is based on an actual radio conversation between a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier (U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln) and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. (The radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on 10/10/95 authorized by the Freedom of Information Act.)

Canadians:  Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid collision.

Americans:  Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians:  Negative.  You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans:  This is the Captain of a US Navy ship.  I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians:  No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans:  THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES’ ATLANTIC FLEET.  WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE  DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT  VESSELS.  I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15  DEGREES NORTH–I SAY AGAIN, THAT’S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH–OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians:  This is a lighthouse.  Your call.

The U.S. Navy has officially denied this took place.

It ain’t necessarily so . . .

A friend of mine is in the hospital with pneumonia. I went over the other day and visited with him. We had one of those casual conversations, focused on nothing in particular.

As I sat there I noticed the “white Board”, you know, the where the nurse’s name is written as is that of the nurse’s attendant and of the doctor. I saw “Doctor Baker”.

Hey, I said. We have the same doctor. Doctor Baker is . . . OPPS!

Doctor Baker is our veterinarian. Hmmm!

It ain’t necessarily so . . .

Jeanette and I and a friend, Lovejoy, went yesterday afternoon. It was a good time to go. The crowds are heavier later in the day.

20th Century Painting

The highlight for me was running into several artists I have exhibited with in the past.

There was Helmut Koller, known for his colorful animal series. He and I shared a booth at the International ArtExpo in New York some years back.

Leopard by Helmut Koller

And, there was Ray Gross the sculptor. He and I have exhibited together.

And we ran into Henry Kaye, a local attorney, who used to participate with me in Life Drawing classes at the Armory Arts Center in West Palm Beach. His drawings were wonderful. He tells me that he making sculpture at Robert St. Croix’s foundry. It is a small world and good to see them all.

Oh Wow!

The news this week is full of “black face” and racism. I find it truly distressing . . . distressing because bad behavior is so prevalent, pervasive and accepted without thought.

I went on the internet and this is some of what I found.

I remember Aunt Jemima from when I was a boy.

Wow!

What can I say? There is enough going around to offend everyone.

Frank Cerabino, the Palm Beach Post columnist, recently wrote on this subject and discussed how behavior accepted in other times might be offensive and hurtful today. It probably was before as well. He gave the example of making his own costume at Halloween in the days before everyone just bought their costume. He dirtied his face and tied a bandana to a pole and went as a “Bum”. I made the same costume when I was young, only I called it a “Hobo”. That seemed simple enough.

Today, if we look at it through the lense of the “Homeless Problem” it seems insensitive and offensive. We need to do better.

On a different note

Art Linkletter the comedian, used to make the observation that Kids Say the Darndest Things. The following was sent to me via Facebook. It is in that same vein.

Cute answers to by children to questions asked by their teach

And With Croquet in mind

It is a busy time at the National Croquet Center

Changing Technology

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about changing technology.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Technology Strikes Again

If you have read my musings before you will no doubt notice some changes now. I have been “Musing” since 2011, using WordPress as a publishing platform. Recently WordPress introduced a new editing system.

Users were encouraged to try the new system with the assurance that if they did not like it they could go back to the older system. That sounded good to me.

Now, I don’t know what I did, but I did something. Only parts of the old system respond now and it is not working. GROWL!

So I have decided to start anew. I have a new domain name and a new layout. This doesn’t really matter to you EXCEPT if you have subscribed in the past to get notices of my posting. If you wish to get notices, please fill out the Subscription request on the right hand side bar.

Old Technology

Weather

As I sit here, the news is focused on the cold spell affecting much of the country. We are fortunate to be spared that in southern Florida. But when the snows and cold come to the mid-west and the north we get rain. And we have had a lot of it the last week. It is not life threatening but it does dampen ones enthusiasm for out-door activity.

The annual Beach Club Invitational Croquet Tournament has just concluded. Play was effected by three days of rain. Some players were prepared with rain gear.

Others had to make do without.

Still, it is better than the cold.
