To Sea Girt and Back

Today we are going to Muse about a road trip.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

On the Road Again

We are just back from a road trip north. I’m trying to get back in the groove.

A month or so ago, Jeanette and I decided to play in the Green Gables Croquet Club Invitational Tournament. The tournament takes place on the New Jersey National Guard base in Sea Girt, New Jersey. Rather than just fly up we made it a driving trip using it as an opportunity to visit sites and see friends along the way.

If you have ever driven from Florida where we live to the northeast on the I-95 highway you know it can be tedious, boring and stressful with heavy traffic and nothing to see except pine trees. We decided to go inland where possible and avoid the I-95.

Augusta, GA

Getting out of east coast Florida avoidance is not possible, so the first day we drove the I-95 from West Palm Beach to near Savannah where we went inland to Augusta, Georgia. The traffic was heavy and we were in rain much of the way. We saw two crashes, one right next to us nearly involving us. A long and stressful day.

Charlotte, NC

The next day we drove only a couple hours to Charlotte, North Carolina, where we stopped to see an old friend. A nice dinner, a nice visit made the day a winner. And it allowed the stress of the first day to fall away.

We left Charlotte traveling, through the Shenandoah Valley, on our way to Gettysburg where we planned to stay with our friends, Jim and Scott. They recommended that we stop along the way at Natural Bridge, VA, a state park.

“Its half way from Charlotte and a beautiful place to stop. At the bottom by the river there is a funky place to grab lunch, which is pretty good”, they said.

So we did.

Natural Bridge State Park

When you arrive you go through a large reception building which sells tourist stuff: tee-shirts, tchotchkes, hats and more. And entrance tickets!

Off we went.

Entrance

Jeanette led the way down the winding path to the bottom of the gorge.

At the bottom a river runs along the gorge and under the Natural Bridge. The bridge was formed over the millions of years by the erosion of the river. In the late 1700’s it was purchased by Thomas Jefferson and today it has a road across it.

Natural Bridge

We had our lunch riverside and then took a shuttle up to our parked car. Thank goodness for the shuttle. It was hot and the climb up would have been difficult.

Gettysburg, PA

Leaving Virginia behind us, we continued on to Gettysburg where we stayed two nights with our friends Jim and Scott. They purchased a home there several years ago. Jim’s family goes back several generations there and he has a fond attachment to the area.

We had been there a number of years ago, visiting the battlefield, but had not really spent anytime in the countryside. One afternoon while some of the party was napping, Scott took me for a drive through the surrounds. If you find yourself in the Gettysburg area, I recommend you do the same. The countryside is beautiful, rolling hills, apple orchards, cherry orchards, peach orchards, corn fields, with farmers markets, farms and small quaint towns. Very peaceful.

Jim, when he was in high school, had been the youngest battlefield tour guide at the time. He knows the battlefield and gave us a much better understanding of how the battle unfolded.

Confederate position day one

The battlefield is immense. I think Jim said the national park is 35 square miles and does not include all of the territory where the battle was fought.

Union position day one/ Jeanette and Scott

As you can see, it was a great day to visit the park.

Around the battlefield there are many monuments, monuments to fighting units and monuments to individual commanders like Reynolds and Meade. Most are union monuments.

This monument is typical. It is a monument for the Pennsylvania Infantry. The plaque lists the number of officers and men killed, wounded, captured, or died by disease.

Some are placed in location as if they were in the battle.

Monument to Union Brigadier General Gouverneur Kemble Warren on Little Round Top

The most interesting monuments from an artist’s viewpoint are those of Mississippi and Louisiana.

Louisiana

I came away very impressed with the area and appreciative of Jim’s and Scott’s hospitality.

So, then it was off to Sea Girt, New Jersey and the Green Gables Croquet Club.

Sea Girt, New Jersey

Gettysburg to Sea Girt

The area is beautiful this time of year. Our hostess, Peggy, keeps a summer home there. I asked her what the winters were like and she responded with one word: Grim.

The Tournament

The tournament started Thursday and concluded Sunday with both singles and doubles match play. There were thirty nine players. Rain threatened but never came and it was hot.

One day I played four matches, which is a bit more than five hours, in the sun. Another day I played four matches, nearly four hours in the sun. Each night I was beat.

In the end, I played in the finals match in the first flight losing to Quinn Reinhardt, age 18. He played a great game.

I knew I was in trouble when Quinn, three ball dead with his black ball on the line behind wicket one, going for wicket two scored the wicket across the court. If you don’t know croquet I will tell you that is an unbelievable shot. Wickets are set to 1/32 of an inch clearance in tournament play.

Quinn will be a national croquet presence, I predict.

It was a fun tournament.

Monday we were on the road again and drove down the dreaded I-95 to Fayetteville, NC. Long day but uneventful.

And finally, home to West Palm Beach, FL. Long trip. Had fun. Glad it is over.

Things that go awry

Two weeks ago we were watching a PGA Tournament on our television. It was a cloudy day at the tournament. The sky was a light dull gray. The sun was trying to break through. It was a light faint white circle in the field of gray.

Then I noticed that one eye of the commentator was brighter than the other when his head was about in the same spot on the TV screen as the sun had been!?

Would you believe . . . we had a white spot forming on our screen!

I had never seen something like this before. Our set, an LG, is less that five years old. None of my previous sets had a problem like this.

As I was grousing about the issue, Jeanette did the smart thing and went into her files and found we had a five year warranty and that we purchased the set four years seven month ago. That was good news.

We got a store credit.

So now we have a new smart TV. Of course the new set has more capabilities than the old set and the picture is brighter and sharper so it cost more than the store credit. But what the hey, we have a new TV and a new five year warranty! Now all we have to do is learn how to navigate the various options.

I remember when the television had three channels. You selected them by manually turning a dial and the news was 30 minutes.

The Barber Pole

Today we are going to Muse about the barber shops.   If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. The Barber Pole

The other day I was driving home, through a less than affluent part of town, when I came to a stop at a light.  As I waited for  it to turn, I noticed out the window, on the adjacent building a column painted in a wrap-around red, white and blue descending stripe.  It was a barber pole!  A barber pole! Imagine, a barber pole!.  I haven’t seen one of those in years.

barber pole

That brought back a flood of memories.  When I was a kid we went to a barber shop, not a hair salon.  It was a manly place!

hair stuff

There were hair creams, face lotions, hot towels, large aprons.  There were always interesting magazines!  Not People Magazine or Entertainment Today. The barbers dressed in white and worked Tuesday through Saturday.

The only time I remember a woman being in the shop was when a mother brought in her son for his haircut, usually his first.  After a short time we boys learned how to negotiate that transaction alone.

One time, about  age 6, I went alone to the barber and ordered a “butch”.   That would be style 27-29 below.  I had longer hair at the time, parted on the side.

The Barber asked, “Is this OK with your mother?

“Oh sure!  She said it was OK.  All the other kids have butches.”

So off went the hair and I came home looking like fur ball.  That night I cried because I couldn’t comb it.  I liked to comb my hair.  Today I don’t have too much to work with.

The barber shop was unlike any other place in town.  As I said it was a manly place.  And you knew where it was because it always had a barber pole.  I could spot the barbershop a block away.  It wasn’t necessary to read.  When I went to a different town, like to visit my grandparents, I could spot the barbershop.  And, I knew I would be welcome even though I was unknown to the barbers.

That’s another thing!  Barbers with an “S”.  Most shops had four chairs.  In the city there were often more.  Always there were at least two.  At least that is what my memory tells me.

Today the barber poles are mostly gone.  When I first arrived here I had a terrible time finding a barber.  It never occurred to me to use the white pages.  I was looking for the barber pole.  Now even white pages seem to be history.

And today barber shops are rare.  What we have are mostly hair salons today with not too interesting magazines.  The “Manly” shops have changed!  And they are hard to find without a barber pole.

My friends recommend this place, but I can’t find it.

A Penny for Your Thoughts

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is computer-work-flattened.jpg

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about collecting.   If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Colored text is a link.  So is a word underlined in dots like “Musings” in the above paragraph. Clicking on the text will provide additional information about the subject.

I am being nostalgic today. Recently I was watching a movie and heard “A penny for your thoughts”. It triggered some memories.

During my childhood, with the exception of a few years, I lived in a different state than did my grandparents. Almost every year, however, I would be sent to them for a visit lasting a week or two. I loved those times.

I was very fond of my grandparents, in particular my grandmother. She was formal. I was allowed to call her “Grandmother”. My grandfather was “Grandpa”, but there was no “Grandma”. It was “Grandmother”.

She had been a school teacher and had good way with children. She was thoughtful and caring.

My Grandfather also was formal. I don’t remember ever seeing him without a tie. He was a quiet dour looking man. He was 69 when I was born so, by the time I focused on him, he didn’t have a lot of playfulness left. As a child, I was more guarded with him.

But he was a collector: stamps and pennies.

One day when I was about 10 he took me into a bank and bought $5 worth of pennies, ten rolls. Wow! I had no idea why.

penny rolls

When we got home we unwrapped the pennies and started seeing how many different dates we could find. Grandpa produced a blue book with slots to hold one of each date and mint (S – San Francisco D – Denver and blank – Philadelphia). I was fascinated.

So started my little coin collection. It was something I could do with him every year when I visited. It wasn’t expensive because you only found a few missing pennies and it took time, time we had together.

Some of my pennies

As you can see, the collection is not complete. I know people who purchase coins from coin collectors to fill their collection. I never have. I always have taken them from circulation. And, over time I have done it less and less.

There was one year I always wanted: 1909. Four different pennies were produced that year: 1909, 1909 S, 1909 VDB and 1909 S VDB.

VDB are the initials of the coin’s designer Victor David Brenner. The S and the S VDB coins are valuable.

When I was about 15, I played Canasta with my Grandmother and a lady friend of hers nearly every night. I talked about wanting to get a 1909 penny, but that they were hard to find. The lady said, “Come on over to my house tomorrow. I think I might have one you can have.” When I got there the next day she pulled out a mason jar filled to the top with 1909 pennies, all four mints. The first year it came out she saved every penny she got in change.

She gave me the 1909 VDB. So I have two of the four.

1909 VDB and 1909

They are not much to look at now, but . . .

Hey they are 110 years old!

The Gift

Hello

Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Birthday

Birthdays are special, a time to celebrate and to anticipate. Jeanette’s is just around the corner . It is also our wedding anniversary so it has double significance.

We have decided to celebrate by playing in a croquet tournament in July up north. However, I wanted to do something tangible before then. My decision was to do her portrait in watercolor.

The lesson

I thought I would show you the process, sort of a miniature lesson in painting.

Watercolor is unique in that light colors are created by using thin applications of paint which allows the whiteness of the paper to create the tint. The painting is built by painting the lightest areas first and continuing to the darkest areas last. And, to create a darker shade the painter can apply multiple layers of glaze using the original color.

Getting Started

So, the first step of course is to set up the work area.

painting area

Here you see from left to right, a couple of brushes on paper towels, a strip of paper for testing the color before application, mixing bowels for glazes, a pallette, three jars of water and a spray bottle. Behind the pallette is a jar of brushes.

Stretched paper

And now the work

On the left is the stretched paper with the start of the portrait. You can see some of the light sketch. The paper is gray because I have applied a thin wash of blue and brown (which creates gray) to tone it down.

initial wash

The paper has buckled because it is wet from the application of the wash of color. When it dries, it will shrink and be pulled taut and flat. The process takes time because it is important that each layer is dry before attempting to paint over it. If it is wet the paint may lift and ruin the work.

next wash

Once the paper has dried, another wash of the same color mixture is applied but not on the areas that are to remain lightest. As you can see the image begins to build.

Another wash

And again, the darker areas are covered with the same color mixture creating more definition.

color

At this point I have introduced a warm color wash, the first of many.

color glazes

The gray underglaze establishes the basic value pattern, light s and darks. Thin washes of color are beginning to define the face. Areas such as the nose and forehead are not given as many washes as the darker parts of the face.

more color

At this point I began to add burnt umber, raw sienna and a touch of payne’s gray to the hair.

Green and Dark

And now green for contrast. Note that the green scarf is created by a thin wash of green over the existing dark and light value underpainting.

Nearly done

The darks are enhanced. Her coat is painted with a mixture of a Indanthrene blue, paynes gray and burnt sienna which reads as black but is much richer. The details of the face are delicately applied using a dry brush technique.

The gift

On a different note:

Told to me by a friend who will remain unnamed:

It had been a long, long day, and John, the truck driver, really wanted to just get home. Living in Washington D.C, he knew traffic would be bad this time of evening, but to his horror, a traffic jam reared ahead of him larger than anything he could have anticipated. Bewildered, since he hadn’t heard anything yet on the news, he stuck his head out and just kept seeing cars slowing down and then driving off. Nothing was moving.

Suddenly, a man knocked on the window. John rolled down the window and asked, “What’s going on?”
Terrorists have kidnapped the entire US Congress!”
“Oh my gosh!” exclaimed John.
“And they’re asking for a $100 million dollar ransom.”
Jeez Louise!” moaned John.
“Otherwise, they are going to douse them all in gasoline and set them on fire!”
“Lord have mercy!” cried John.
“We are going from car to car, collecting donations.”
“How much is everyone giving, on average?” asked John.
“About a gallon.”

Bang Bang Bang

I wrote about this last year. The problem is still with us.

In 2018 there were 323 mass shootings, shootings in which 4 or more people were injured or killed. In total 387 people were killed and 1274 were injured. Six shootings occurred at school.

In the first four months of 2019 there have been 105 mass shootings, leaving 120 people dead and 387 injured. Nearly everyday we hear about another mass shooting.

Most of these assaults are made using military style long guns with automatic capabilities or automatic pistols with large magazine capacity. These weapons have no legitimate civilian purpose.

And it happened in 2016 and 2015 and before and before.

Here in Florida the legislature has passed a bill that will allow certain teachers to be armed.   I think that will bring more tragedy.

When asked about the school violence, Oliver North the former president of the National Rifle Association said  “If you want to stop the carnage, you aren’t going to fix it by taking away the rights of law-abiding citizens. You have got to fix it in a way that hardens the place sufficient that the kids are safe inside the door. If that means metal detectors, you get five metal detectors”.

Really?

The problem is more than a school issue.  Do we want metal detectors at our churches, synagogues, mosques, theaters, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping malls, grocery stores and any other place where people gather?  Do we want armed guards?

How about the status quo?  Shall we just continue to do what we do now?

It is time for a change.

Season Ending

The end of season…

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about the end of season.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Off they go

Once again the winter residents are heading home. It happens each year about this time. Easter seems to be the trigger. Easter comes and people go.

With Easter being so late this year, many people stayed longer than normal. But that is changing. The other day I saw two extra long car transport trucks back to back loading up. I’ve seen several others on different days.

This means change down here: less traffic, less wait and summer restaurant specials. For those of us who live here most of the year its a sad-happy time. Sad to see our friends go, but happy to enjoy the trade-offs.

With the changing of the season comes the rain and humidity. Florida’s rainy season is said to start May 15. This year however, it came early. Like the other parts of the country we have had some severe weather the last several weeks. Each year, during the first week of May, West Palm Beach hosts SunFest, a five day music festival that draws thousands of people: locally, from the Fort Lauderdale area and Miami. This week they had heavy storms daily. Hmm! Those who attended reported that despite the rain and wind it was a great festival.

So, if you are seasonal, I wish you “happy trails”; if you are local, I say “Enjoy the specials”; if you are neither, I say “Come on down. You’ll like it”

On A Different Note

The following was sent to me. I cannot verify it. I do not know if I believe all of it. But, I thought you might find it interesting.

It’s time again for the annual ” Stella Awards”!

For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald’s in New Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right?

That’s right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S.

Here are the Stella’s for this year:

SEVENTH PLACE

Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son.

————————
SIXTH PLACE *

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn’t notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor’s hubcaps.

————————–
FIFTH PLACE *

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn’t re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count ’em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner’s insurance company claiming undue mental anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish.

FOURTH PLACE *

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, garnered 4th Place in the
Stella’s when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next-door neighbor’s beagle – even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner’s fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

———————————–

THIRD PLACE *

Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

————————————-

*SECOND PLACE*

Kara Walton, of  Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000. Oh, yeah, plus dental expenses.

———————————

FIRST PLACE *

This year’s runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma , who purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver’s seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also, not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner’s manual that she couldn’t actually leave the driver’s seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down?

$1,750,000.  PLUS, a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.

So, what do you think?

The Figure

You will have to indulge me as I engage in a little tooting of my own horn. Over the years I have produced paintings of a wide variety of subjects executed in many styles. But, for the most part I have been drawn to the figure, the figure as a study or as part of a larger composition.

There is one subject that over the years I have returned to many times: ME. The model is always available. I thought I would show you a progression. Here goes:

On a Different Note

I would like to introduce you to my neighbor. The other day I was walking my dog and this fellow appeared:

I didn’t have a camera with me and he headed off into the bushes. The next day he appeared again which is when I took the photo. He just stood and watched me walk by. He seems to be comfortable in the neighborhood.

The Promise of Spring

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is computer-work-flattened.jpg

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about the promise of spring.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

……………….. text is a link.  Clicking on the text will provide additional information about the subject.

The Promise of Spring

When we built our house, we planted two Royal Poinciana trees in the front yard. When in bloom the tree can be stunning, red and vibrant.

It also grows to be very large with a wide canopy that drops leaves and flowers.

The landscaper did not advise us well. Two were too much for our front yard.

I had one removed and the stump ground out.

The remaining tree has grown with a vengeance. In season it’s canopy spreads over the front yard and over the roof of the house. And it drops leaves and twigs onto the roof and into the gutter, with the result that the gutter has clogged and backed up causing problems. One of the joys of home ownership.

I had the tree cut back.

I had the tree cut back

Jeanette was concerned that I killed the tree. So was my neighbor. And, actually the thought crossed my mind. But our gardener reassured me, “No Sir, it will come back”.

It has been three weeks.

I am happy to reports that he is correct. The tree lives.

New Growth

And look at these orchids. They had died back and were essentially discarded in the back yard. I thought they were beyond saving. Jeanette had more faith; she fed them. But neither of us really thought much of them.

But look at them now. They are more resplendent today than they have ever been.

A Beauty

Magnificent

It is the promise of spring.

On another topic

Last night we watched Motown 60: A GRAMMY Celebration. It was hosted by Smokey Robinson.

It was quite interesting to me. I realized there was a whole part of our cultural world that passed me by. As an adult I met Smokey Robinson; I did not know who he was.

During the time Motown was emerging I lived overseas. When I came stateside for college, I didn’t even own a radio, much less a television. The first car I bought had no radio . . . that would have added $5 to the monthly payment. So I missed a lot. Did I miss everything? No! Of course not. But my awareness is pretty sketchy.

One of the Motown songs showcased on the program that really stood out to me was Mercy, Mercy Me by Marvin Gaye. The lyrics speak to the times in which we live. Gaye was ahead of his time.

Whoa, ah, mercy mercy me
Oh things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and eastWhoa mercy, mercy me,
Oh things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas, fish full of mercuryAh, oh mercy, mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Radiation under ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dyingOh mercy, mercy me
Oh things ain’t what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land
How much more abuse from man can she stand?

Marvin Gaye

And one last thing

To the Letter

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about the post office box.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Colored text is a link.  Clicking on the text will provide additional information about the subject.

TO THE LETTER

Today I sent three packages to their respective destinations: some salad plates, some western shirts and a snake skin I have have had for sixty years. Each went to a different address.

There is really nothing remarkable about that, but it did get me thinking about the post office.

Post Office box

When was the last time you went to a post office? I’ll bet it was a single purpose trip, not something you do very often. For me, that is not the case. I have a post office box. I go several times a week. I rarely see anyone collecting their mail. I rarely have mail.

Why I have a box is not clear to me anymore. Advertising and political testimonials … that is the vast majority of the mail that goes to my box. The rest goes to the house.

I think I have it because of my grandfather. He had a post office box all his adult life. For many years he had his own business which required a post office box.

My grandfather was 69 when I was born, so, by the time I focused on him, he was in his mid seventies. I would spend a week or two with my grandparents each summer. Each afternoon my grandfather and I would walk downtown to the post office. There was seldom any mail by that time.

After the post office we would walk to the Elks Club where he would have a drink and I would have a coke. Then we would walk home. A daily ritual.

My grandfather collected stamps. He would buy plate blocks, stamps that were still attached to their original sheet and including the serial number of the printing plate in the sheet’s margin or selvage. It’s a collector’s thing.

He would also send first day of issue letters to my brother and me when they were issued. I still have one.

As to the others, I was too young to think to keep them unfortunately; I just thought they were “neat”.

Stamps have changed. They no longer have the quality or charm that I remember from the past. I don’t know if first day of issue mailings are still done or if people collect them.

But I keep the post office box.

There is one valuable purpose the box serves. In the summer we often go to Mexico, staying more than a month. That creates a logistical problem. The postal service will “hold” residential mail, mail that goes to the house, for up to 30 days, not longer. What happens then I do not know. Is it discarded? Is it returned? It is a problem!

I have it forwarded to the post office box.
